Au Pair USA - why to do it

by Gazela Pudar 10.11.2009
You have probably heard of Au Pair program. The girls are going somewhere and babysitting. But have you ever asked yourself what is the benefit of such sensitive job?

Au Pair is an international cultural exchange program where the girls from all over the world have the right to participate. Now you may ask why just girls? Till recently, baby-sitting was linked only to girls, but nowadays there are men also applying and participating in the program. So, it’s a program for girls and boys 18-26 years old who have affinities to children, enjoy working with them and have some experience with baby-sitting. Beside that, you would have to know English quite good and have a driving license.

Program lasts for 12 months, unless you want to extend it. During this time, you are taking care of the child up to 45 hours per week and have free weekends and vacations also. You have a chance to intimately experience another culture, since families treat you as an equal member of the family and not just any employee. Au Pair core meaning is "working together as a pair". You are in position to share your own culture with your American family and make a difference in a child's life!

As an Au Pair USA participant, you have an opportunity to:

• learn about the American way of life from very inside – family
• make academic progress (mandatory part of the program is attendance of academic course which American family pays 500 USD)
• travel a month through USA after staying in the family
• improve English language
• make new friends among Americans as well other Au Pair participants from all over the world
• participate in various cultural and social activities with other participants

Beside these benefits, program is very “pocket-friendly” and you don’t need to be a student as on some other programs. You can count on:
• very low costs of participation in the program (main costs and air ticket are covered by the American family)
• free accommodation and meals
• weekly income in the amount of 176.85 USD per week (in 2009)

Certainly, you may ask how safe it is to go there and stay in someone’s family. What if something goes wrong?

All families have to pass strict and thorough screening and admissions procedure for the program. Just as you have to fulfill various requirements, the family has to show its hospitability and readiness to accept a person from other culture and treat her as equal. The participant can, in any time call his supervisor if something goes wrong, but everything is done in advance to prevent any mess.

When you choose your family, you have opportunity to talk to potential hosts and exchange opinions, questions and see if you like it or not. Au Pair is responsible duty and you have to be responsible in the first place.

So, if you are interested to become au pair, visit AU PAIR USA and ask whatever you would like to know!

If you are maybe more interested in some other countries, since the program is not limited only to US, you should check AUPAIR.COM for info.
