Using GPS to clean up an entire country?

by Sasa Petrasova 01.04.2011

Teeme Ära 2008

There was more than 10 000 tons of illegal waste lying around in Estonian nature. In October 2007, a group of active citizens realised that something drastic needs to be done. They developed a special software and geomapped more than 10 000 dumping sites all over the country. And on 3rd of May 2008, engaging hundreds of organisations and more than 50 000 volunteers, they cleaned it all up in just 5 hours!

Who was involved? In order to make this project a success, the organisers knew from the beginning that we needed strong partners from the private, public and third sector. Partners who would not be involved just by name or for some sum of money. They needed people and organizations who were in for the right reasons, who cared about the idea and were interested in participating!

In addition to the biggest companies in Estonia, many smaller open-minded companies, organizations and civil groups joined, who believed in the mission and wanted to be a part of it. There was also strong support from the Ministry of the Environment of Estonia, the President of Estonia, and the Parliament of Estonia.
