Two nordic European capitals of culture

by Stani Gajdosova 24.03.2011

Turku's Capital of Culture year 2011 is one of Finland's most important cultural investments in decades. The programme for the year comprises 155 projects involving a diverse group of Finnish and international participants. Thousands of events will be launched during the year.

In 2011, culture will be present in Turku in unlikely places like supermarket checkouts. Logomo is a former engineering workshop for train carriages revamped into the Capital of Culture year's new centre. The programme seeks to particularly highlight the role of culture for the wellbeing of people and the environment, a message Turku wishes to spread to the rest of Europe.

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, will also be the capital of culture for all of Europe in 2011. This will be the biggest cultural event in the history of Estonia. Something will be happening in Tallinn every day in 2011, since the year of capital of culture will be bringing some of the world’s biggest names to Estonia.

Check out projects like Afro Reggae and Trumm-It, the young audience program as well as Tallinn Maritime Days and the project "60 Seconds of Solitude in Year Zero" that will be launched in 2011.

Please also visit the website of Roof Top Cinema – the first event of the project „Cinema in the Urban Space“ of the European Capital of Culture and participate in the contest Stories of the Seashore at e-Stories.org. This project originated from Germany and Austria and offers a platform for writers from all over the world in many languages.
