Travelling with Respect

by Gazela Pudar 19.12.2009
Have you ever thought of yourself as someone who influences people when travelling? Yes, you don’t do anything, but still…

Travelers have an impact on the people and places they visit. That’s why it is important to have in mind while not only communicating local people, but even before you start travelling. Travel in general shouldn't have a negative effect on local environments and people in general. You go there to see local particularities; otherwise it would be the same anywhere you go. Responsible travelers balance their curiosity with a respect for the cultural and natural heritage of local environments and societies.

That’s why you should follow few simple rules in order to provide a positive experience for both locals and yourself as a traveler.
  • Research your destination before trip – Find out about local practices, customs, greetings and religious traditions to help you respect and better understand the local people and culture. “Google” places in order to see what other people who were there experienced.
  • Try to understand diversity – Travel is all about having an open mind, and even certain local customs may seem strange, try to find out where they originate from. Cultures are about diversity.
  • Respect the local culture – When talking about local politics, religion, customs or dress code, try to understand the local perspective. If you disagree, don’t push with your ideas as to not offend, but try to express your reasons.
  • Watch on your behavior – Be familiar with local laws and attitudes towards drugs, alcohol, what types of body language can be offensive and dress code. If you chew your gum in Singapore, for instance, you risk paying a fine.
  • Learn a few local words – Try to learn some words in the local language such as thank you, please and hello, since each local will warmly welcome such expressions as a sign of your respect for their culture.
  • Dress appropriately – You should respect dress code which is different in some countries. Also, there are some requirements for admittance into places of worship, such as covering up shoulders and legs or removing your shoes. So, you don’t go in a short dress or shorts around Teheran, it is not acceptable, even if it is over 30 degrees.
  • Support local communities – When you visit some place, it is not really expected that you buy imported goods. Although sometimes you have to be careful what you eat. But otherwise, buy local products in order to support the local community. It is far more enriching and mutually beneficial.

Traditional methods of survival and heritage could disappear forever, if we are not careful enough. By supporting cultural events and traditions, you can encourage local people to preserve their cultural heritage. The same applies to already endangered enviroment.

Our small step is a giant leap for mankind...
