The Road less travelled

by Asabi Rawlins 28.02.2010
I believe it was Robert Frost who first told us about the fork in the road, the choice of which part one takes in life; the road less travelled. In life we all make hypotheses and through our choice of roads, through the paths we take we prove (or disprove) these hypotheses without even realizing. The fact is, at some point or another everyone makes a choice, our choices vary in magnitude and circumstance but every decision does serve to impact our lives and the lives of those around us. A few years ago, I made a choice and I would like to believe that this 'decision' I made has changed my life.***** Back to the year 2006, I was a young girl (well I'm still young) but I was younger, formulating opinions. Who I was for that period, the things I did, the friends I held.... these things scare me. When I reflect on my former self I am mortified, horror rips my being. Luckily I made my choice, it seems to have been the right choice. I distanced myself from all that I was. I took the road less travelled by girls my age. Yes , I still had fun but one can be self satiated without the compromise of one's beliefs. So what if I no longer get invited to a party every weekend, so what if I don't spend every waking moment talking on the phone. I still lead an extremely fulfilling life, instead of having tons of acquaintances , I surround myself with a close group of friends that I know I can trust. I know that I love journalism, and foreign cultures, so I immerse myself in activities which are affiliated with this. I made my hypothesis and I tested it, the friends you choose are of great consequence to who you turn out to be. I have been on both sides of the fence, I have been in the popular crowd, I know what it's like to have an opinion; but have it mufflled because you want to conform. Now I say what I want, I do what I want and as I mentioned in one of my previous articles Now I smile!! I have transitioned from an uncertain, insecure self concious 14 year old to a confident 16 year old, whose walls are filled with trophies and accolades, leader of activism clubs. However, It's not the awards that make me certain that I was right in choosing the road I chose, It's the fact that I look in the mirror and I am proud, I am happy with who I am. I continue to grow and hopefully I will always choose the right path.
