To read or not to read

by Askhat Kaybushev 22.12.2009

Everyone knows the problem that the youth does not read. But let us consider why? As for me reading means reading classics like Pushkin, Gogol and Chekhov. I was attracted by these authors in school time. But now I read seldom. I always understood that reading is very important, because it enriches the spiritual world of each man. But how to make myself read? For many young people, the book should not be burdened. It should entertain us. This is debatable. Various detectives, love stories and other "useless" literature are only a waste of time and cluttering the brain. They are useless and did not develop a moral personality. But no doubt, there are excellent books.
Young people absolutely have no time to read. They are loaded into the school / college. Someone plays sports, dances, attends music school. But at the same time, everyone wants to chat with friends, and walk, and relax. You can say, there is no time for books. And what about our parents? They studied in the universities, attended various sections, listened to music, communicated with friends. We differ, perhaps, because we don’t read ... But not everyone thinks this is a problem. They say that the information in our modern world is enough for youth. Book has many rivals: glossy magazines, Internet, pop culture, entertainments, films and other things. Do these sources provide useful information? No. Read is a success. Maybe it sounds strange. I believe that the successful person must be intelligent. Clever means literate, means educated, means well read ... But in our society some priorities have changed: today you can never read a single line from Dostoevsky, Chekhov, Pasternak, Bulgakov, yes, even Pushkin! "- and make a successful career in business or sports. The definition of "successful people" is no longer associated with such concepts as intelligence, erudition, intellectual development, decency, as well. Youth sees it and absorbs.
Also, we are faced with the problem of the age of the reader. Children in the age of 15-16 years are not ready for understanding Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. Especially under the pressure. The conclusion is: Russia's book market has not enough literature for teenagers, "live" literature and talks about the problems of our time.
Read or not read? The choice is yours!
