Movies to watch out for in 2010

by Kevin De Ridder 28.12.2009
2010 promises to be another year with exciting movies. We delve into the movies of next year and discover a series of issues that young people deal with. The five most promising coming of age movies for 2010.

University of life

An Education
will ring a bell with everybody. When you're nearly eighteen, you're ready to discover the world. You wanna throw away all of your studybooks and explore the real world with new grown responsibilities. So does Jenny. Almost graduated from high school, the real life lurks around the corner. Her parents are pushing her to go to Oxford University, but when a mystery man twice her age makes his appearance at the end of the final high school year, she may want to start this exciting life earlier. Based on a book by Nick Hornby, who's know to tackle serious subjects in a more lighter way, I believe this movie promises to be an interesting examination of the educational mores that lay at the ground of our current civil model.

Who am I?

Samson & Delilah live in an isolated Aboriginals community in Australia. A boring place struck by poverty, but when a terrible murder takes place, they decide to run away. On a quest for freedom and in search of their own identity. A hard trip where because pretty soon they are exhausted and struggling with the basic needs of survival. An intimate journey to selfdiscovery. The reality of the aboriginals is very grim, as recent statistics show. The crime rate (robberies, family violence, sexual offences) is incredible high. Youngsters are trapped, so running away often is the only way out.

Survival of the fittest

Life is hard. Precious knows the deal. Only sixteen, pregnant from her second child and raised in an abusive household. She’s desperately searching for her place in this world, but dreams of becoming a popstar singer are shattered when confronted with the daily reality of Harlem. In this search for her talents she turns to school. A shelter, but a playground of chaos because she can’t read nor write. But she’s determined to make something out of life. It's a sad fact that black teens have the highest pregnancy rate in the United States, but there's an significant change going on. In the last two decades their pregnancy rate has declined with no more than fourthy percent, mostly due to more consistent contraceptive use. A nice evolution that hopefully point out to a better understanding of sexuality among teens.

The power of music

Music is an important way of expression. In Iran, it’s an act of resistance. When Negar and Ashkan, two young musicians, are released from prison in No One Knows About Persian Cats, they decide to form a band. Prohibited to play in their own country due to censorship laws they look for fellow musicians in the underground scene in Teheran to join them in their musical project. They are determent to get their music out there and look to Europe for a concert. Not so easy without money or visas. I expect this to be a very liberating movie about how young people can make a change with only their voice to be heard.

Love is in the air

When high school comes to an end in Raw Love, all emotions are thrown in one bag. Jeremias and Ivan, two best friends, spend the last day together and aren’t quiet sure how they feel. A bit nostalgic, a bit happy, a bit in love? Faced with a goodbye, they see their friendship in a new light. Their feelings may be larger than just some camaderie. An awareness they are not yet so keen on to reveal. Homosexuality still is a taboo, especially in countries like Argentina where the heterosexual machismo still prevails. Although the climate towards same sex relationships is definitely changing, as last month the first gay marriage took place in Tierra del Fuego. Liberal thinking that can only be encouraged.
