Learn how to protect your identity online

by Stani Gajdosova 19.01.2012

Do you ever worry about the privacy settings of your Facebook account or have you considered your digital footprint online?
The Safer Internet Day 2012, which takes place on February 7, is encouraging people of all ages to be responsible internet users.

Besides national organisations, there are also institutional supporters of the SID, such as the Council of Europe, which runs a campaign to stop sexual predators using the internet to solicit children. Also several technology companies such as Kaspersky Lab, Microsoft, Vivendi or Yahoo are joining in the efforts to make the internet safer and users more aware of their choices.

The SID website includes an interactive map on which you can look up events in your city or region and follow the campaign on Facebook and Twitter.

Did you know that..?
- 12 per cent of European 9-16 year olds say they have been bothered or upset by something on the internet…
…however, 56 per cent of parents whose child has received nasty or hurtful messages online are not aware of this.
- 36 per cent of 9-16 year olds claim that they definitely know more about the internet than their parents.
- Parents get internet safety advice first and foremost from family and friends (48 per cent).
- 87 per cent of children use the internet at home.

For more reading on the e-safety and awareness raising activities check out the SID info kit.
